steve frisco, of serie limitee fame, brings us the latest bundle of hot tracks to hit wax classic in 2014. as the title suggests, steve takes us on a journey through low fidelity sounds and production techniques. think dark, moody, yet crunchy basement house tracks with inspiration taken from all over the u.s and the rest of the house world. it’s a generous offering as well. six whole dusty tunes for those diggers who are looking for something with a bit more range than another record of generic piano laden, house-by-numbers pieces that still seem to be flooding the record store shelves in 2014. the moods do vary from track to track, but they remain very reflective and almost melancholic at points. the title track, ‘adventure in lo-fi’, is the deepest of the lot with filtered chords, echoing claps and a sporadic kick pattern that often clears way for the track’s bass hits. now, compare that to ‘da brooklyn beat’. whilst the former had a distinct sunrise/sunset kind of feel to it, the latter is definitely more of a club affair. skippy snare hits and a strong organ lead the track on, and at the risk of utilizing very overused buzzwords such as ‘raw’ and ‘ruff’, this track, and the rest of the a-side for that matter, certainly captures that essence. stalwart wax classic fans will no doubt be picking this one up to add to their collection. however, i strongly recommend this ep as a jumping in point to the label for any newcomers out there

after a nine-year hiatus, sheree rashit and steve bicknell relaunch cosmic records with the transcendence ep within their lost recordings division. founded in 1993, the label ran in conjunction with the pairs infamous lost events, which introduced acts such as jeff mills, robert hood and basic channel to the uk dancefloor. past cosmic releases include productions and remixes from us artists such as juan atkins, tyree cooper, djs funk and rush alongside prominent uk names working under pseudonyms devised for cosmic. having previously released via perfecto and mute, cosmic has provided a home for steve bicknells releases since its inception. his next phase continues the lost recordings series that began in 1996 with the 8th segment, transcendence. comprising 4 untitled tracks in steve bicknells inimitable style - a depiction of the lost dancefloor - transcendence, lr 8 is hypnotic with depth and soul, transcending boundaries. initially vinyl only.

ron maney also known as dj skull lived in the southside of chicago (il, usa). his musical career started during the summer of 1986, while recovering from a broken bone. during the following years he homed his craft, djing first at basement parties, building his reputation to go on to larger events such as, loft and hotel parties, and eventually the infamous music box and power plant clubs. at the age of fifteen ron shopped his first demo at trax records. there he first met chicago s legendary dj ron hardy, working as a&r for trax records. two years, and a new alias later (dj skull) later while at the power plant, chicago s own steve poindexter heard a dj playing one of rons tracks, and met ron. steve was now a&r at saber records and invited ron to release some tracks. so in october of 1991 dj skull s first record -n.r.g. music- was released. in 1993, he released the ep -the stomping grounds- on djax-up-beats, which was more noted than the first one. over the years that followed dj skull released lots of ep s on several labels. he has become well-respected producer and dj in the techno industry

celebrating the 150th vinyl ep release, and as a prelude to 15 years of poker flat recordings, steve bug returns to his own label to drop a sizzling three track ep of powerful, seductive house music.

the us producer recently joined the ranks of talent residing in berlin and its evident the european techno capital is having a subtle sway on his sound on the basis of this apotheke ep, most notably the title track. theres a sense of driving momentum wedged deep in the sonic dna of this track, complemented well by a low slung bassline and airy synth melodies. elsewhere huertas sometime studio sparring partner urulu adds some percussive flex to the pulsating swing set, whilst kingsleys groove swerves the sound back towards deeper house and is apparently named in honour of a friends cat. glenn astro of the tartelet crew ends the release with a wonderfully bumping take on the track.

we first discovered young glasweigian talent barrientos in 2012 via the always on point synthglasgow.com blog. his debut mix for them effortly mixed tracks from atjazz and matthew styles to loco dice, vince watson and steve rschmad and took the listener from the early bounce as the club doors open right through to hands-in-the air madness of a packed dancefloor. we loved it. he alsoreleased the good-time, sun-soaked sky ep (for free via soundcloud) around the same time and the quality of both his music and production really stood out from the crowd.
